Min-max Theory for Geodesics and Minimal Surfaces

Lecture notes: TBA

Course description

This minicourse covers min-max theory for geodesics and minimal surfaces. It begins with Birkhoff’s classical min-max construction of a closed geodesic on a Riemannian sphere and its refinement by Lyusternik and Schnirelmann, then explains how these ideas extend through geometric measure theory to the construction of minimal surfaces. The final part discusses enumerative problems for minimal surfaces and their relationship with Poincaré’s three-geodesics conjecture, based on joint work with Adrian Chu and Zhihan Wang.
